Professor Snape, played by the late actor Alan Rickman, is well-known throughout the world thanks to the Harry Potter movie series.

Sunday’s Google Doodle honors the late English actor Alan Rickman for his legendary Broadway performance in Les Liaisons Dangereuses. On this day, 36 years have passed since the actor gave the play’s remarkable performance, which served as a turning point in his 40-year career.

However, Alan is better known for his role as Professor Snape in the renowned Harry Potter movie series. However, the actor’s career graph begins in the early 1980s. Early in his acting career, Alan participated in a number of theatrical productions, but it wasn’t until 1987, when he played the anti-hero Vicomte de Valmont in Christopher Hampton’s adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, that his career truly took off.

“On this day in 1987, Rickman performed in ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses,’ a Broadway play that was crucial in launching his career,” Google said in honor of Alan’s legendary performance.

The late actor became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and performed in Love’s Labour’s Lost and The Tempest. He is well renowned for his roles in the films Sense and Sensibility, Love Actually, and Die Hard. But after a number of outstanding roles in movies and plays, it was his portrayal of the irate Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films that brought him unmatched acclaim from around the globe.
