At least one employee was killed and five others were hurt when a four-story parking garage collapsed in New York City on Tuesday. The parking garage was close to Pace University and the New York Stock Exchange in downtown Manhattan, New York City.
Following the collapse, Pace University ordered the evacuation of a nearby dorm and classroom building.
Around 4 p.m. local time (2000 UTC/GMT), the building fell.
Robotic instruments were used by emergency responders to search the scene for any additional casualties. Authorities stated that they thought every victim had been found.
One person was declared dead at the site, while four others were brought to nearby hospitals for injuries, according to John Esposito, chief of fire operations for the New York City Fire Department. Esposito reported that one person declined medical care.
The six people were personnel who were present at the site when it collapsed, according to Esposito.
For our firefighters, this was a really risky situation, he declared.
Due to the unstable situation, firefighters were instructed to leave the building. Esposito claimed that despite this, firemen were still carrying out internal searches because “the building was continuing to collapse.”
Authorities stated that there was no evidence of foul play and that structural difficulties were the most likely reason for the collapse. City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell told reporters, “We have no reason to believe that this was anything other than a structural collapse.
Mayor of New York City Eric Adams declared, “This building is completely unstable.”
The building had received 45 citations for violations, including 24 since 2003, according to documents from the New York City Department of Buildings that were available online. According to a 2003 lawsuit, the structure had “defective concrete with exposed rear cracks” and “ceiling slab cracks exist.” It said that a $800 (€728) fine had been paid for the infraction.
