Northern California is shook by an earthquake of magnitude 5.5, and San Francisco is jolted

Officials said that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 rocked Northern California on Thursday afternoon.

The earthquake happened at 4:19 PT, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. According to the USGS, the epicenter of the earthquake was located about 2.5 miles southwest of the East Shore neighborhood. The San Francisco Bay Area experienced a quick shock, but no initial reports of damage have been made.

Since the earthquake was stronger than magnitude 5, #ShakeAlert-powered alerts were sent to mobile devices, according to USGS ShakeAlert.

The earthquake was first recorded as having a magnitude of 5.7, however the USGS revised its value to 5.5. According to the USGS, there were many aftershocks that ranged in size from 2.5 to 3.8 after the earthquake.

The California Highway Patrol in Yuba-Sutter reported that the Chico dispatch center was disrupted by the earthquake and that the 911 lines were down. The organization recommended locals to phone 530-332-1200 as they attempt to fix the problem.

With a population of over 150, East Shore is a census-designated place located around 162 miles northeast of Sacramento.
